UNDER CONSTRUCTION - will update later……. sometime…..
I became a Christian in 1996. It was through an exciting, and frightening miracle that happen in my household that lead me to the truth. It would take me several pages to explain everything in detail so I’ll just try to give you a brief overview of the events that changed my life.
When I moved up to Perth at the beginning of 1995, I lived with some family friends. My Auntie Yolanda, who took care of me, had two children, Rina (who is about 7 months younger than me) and Louis. All of us were non-Christians at the time.
The focus of my testimony in on Louis who is an autistic child. He was born in 1985, so he is about four years younger than me. Autistic people are people who are born without a tendency to communicate. They also find it hard to relate to people and are often in their own little world. Some autistic people displays symptoms such as constant hand waving, rocking back and forth, screaming on occasion and other habits. On average, autistic people have a lower IQ than normal, though some do possess abilities beyond normal human capacities ( such as photo graphical memory or extreme mathematical abilities - think of the movie “Rainman”). However, Louis was not one of those who had any extraordinary talents. He was a below average autistic child who couldn’t speak and didn’t communicate.
Louis attended a special school where they assessed Louis to be incapable of learning written language skills. This lead to Yolanda’s decision and with fierce determination to teach her son to read and write, herself. She then began to plan out her own little teaching program to teach Louis. Following her program for 30 to 45 minutes everyday, she was able to teach Louis how to write his name after ten months. This might sound like a long time, but considering Louis is autistic and initially that he could not sit down still, even for five minutes, achieving this gave great joy to Louis’ mum and dad. He took a further five months to learn counting from one ot nine.
By November 1996, following “Louis’ Program” (which Yolanda named it), Louis was at a stage where he could do simple summations (such as 1 + 5 = 6 etc.). With this skill, we could do a preliminary written (he still couldn’t talk) IQ test to see if Louis could apply for a normal school. The IQ test simply involved mathematical sequences. For example, one question was
“3 6 9 12 ____. What is the next number?”.
The the result of the test showed an IQ of 69, still quite below average.
Although the test can back with a low result, Yolanda noticed a Louis using a skill which she didn’t teach, the concept of multiplication. Most of the questions that were asked involved a concept of the multiplication table. We thought that he was pretty clever, so we wrote down some simple multiplication sums to see if he could do it. A simple example that we would ask him was “11 x 3 = ____” and he would fill in the blank. He managed every simple multiplication sum we threw at him.
At this stage we thought that it was a bonus that Louis would understand multiplication, so we sought to find how much he knew. Within 2 weeks we were asking year 11 geometry and trigonometry questions. There was just no limit! The amazing thing is that Louis could answer a question within two to three seconds and write down the answer without writing down any working out!! Without a calculator!! We were blown away. We thought that maybe he did have mathematical abilities that we didn’t know about. To test this out, we even tried questions that involved division, square roots, sine/cosine, quadratics and even algebra. It was just amazing for a 11 year old autistic kid who can do these questions within seconds. I couldn’t do the sums in the same time as him, even though I was in year 10.
We wanted to find a limit to his knowledge so we went into history questions, science questions, questions written in French, Chinese and even Japanese. He understood and answered every question correctly within seconds.
By now we were really curious. How did Louis know all these things that took me 11 years of studying and still not know. He learnt almost instantaneously! Finally, we had to ask him on paper who taught him the maths . We were half expecting him to write “mum” but right under our noses he wrote “God”. We were terrified. That night, we decided to accept Jesus into our lives.
We never asked him such questions again. Almost everyday after that, Louis wrote messages from the Holy Spirit. He stresses that he himself is only a tool of God and by himself, he is nothing. Louis clearly states that God sent his son Jesus to save us, and that God really loves us.
Each of us has done something wrong in their lives. Whether it be lying or disobeying our parents, to things more serious. Because of these wrongs, each of us do not deserve to know or even be near God. He is a Holy God and He cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Even so, He loved us so much, he sent his own son Jesus, to come to the world and take our punishment. Whoever believes in Him, will not have to face eternal judgment and will receive eternal life (Paraphrased from the Bible in John 3:16). Jesus, who did not do any wrong, died for you so that you can be reconciled with God and spend eternal life with Him. If you want to find out more about the God who did this miracle in Louis and many much greater miracles, please contact me, or visit your local church and ask someone there.
God gives us a gift too precious to ignore.
